From the Editor: One of the most commented on articles was our post on scams and cons in the jewelry industry. The story involves much more than counterfeit products, which is also a huge problem, but focused on the outright fraud perpetrated by bad players. One of the common frauds is the sale of fake precious stones. Technology plays into this by enabling the con artists to present genuine appearing items, like diamonds that are actually synthetic fakes. So those gorgeous cubic zirconia rings, sold by legitimate cubic zirconia vendors, may be repurposed as diamond rings. The scam is much more sophisticated than just making the claim - usually, real diamonds are shown, but during a bait and switch process the cz stones are substituted. But diamonds are far from the only item involved in such scams - they're just the most lucrative. And by using jewelry instead of the raw stones or cut versions, the obfuscation becomes more easily concealable.
